Late Antique-Medieval Studies Major

Requirements for the Major in Late Antique-Medieval Studies (LAMS)
To complete the LAMS major, a student is required to:
- Complete the Senior Seminar (LAMS 190 PO ) and the Senior Thesis (LAMS 191 PO ).
- Complete at least 10 additional courses, including the following:
- Three full-credit language courses, all of which must be in one of the following: ancient Greek, Latin, or Arabic.
- Hebrew also qualifies as a LAMS language, but at present it is not regularly offered at the Colleges.
- LATN 103 PO (Readings in Medieval Latin) and GREK 104 PO (Readings in Koine Greek) are half-credit courses; these courses may be repeated for course credit but no more than two instances of the same course (totaling one full course credit) may count towards the language requirement for the major. LATN 103 PO and GREK 104 PO cannot be combined to satisfy one of the language requirement courses.
- One ancient history survey course selected from the following:
- One ancient culture survey course selected from the following:
- One LAMS survey course selected from the following:
- One LAMS Research Seminar selected from the following and taken either in the sophomore or junior year:
The three remaining courses may be selected freely from the offerings of LAMS.
No single course may be used to fulfill more than one of the above requirements.
Each student’s program should be designed as early as possible in the student’s career in consultation with one or more LAMS faculty members with a view to coherence and depth. Students are encouraged to take related courses in other departments.
LAMS students are strongly encouraged to study abroad in a LAMS-friendly program.
Students who intend to pursue graduate study in a LAMS related field are advised to take courses in the modern foreign language appropriate to their specific regional interests.
