Courses. All lower and upper division courses for the major must be taken for a letter grade.

Students must declare a major in Chinese no later than June 1 of the end of their junior year. The course requirements for the Chinese major are as follows:

  1. Eight upper-division courses, normally CHIN 111A PO , CHIN 111B PO , and six courses from among the other upper-division CHIN and CHNT courses. No more than three Chinese-program courses taught in English can be used to fulfill major requirements. A China-related course in another department may substitute for one upper-division course in the Chinese program, if approved by the ALL department.
  2. Senior Project: Guided research on a selected topic in the final year, either a one-semester senior research paper (CHIN 192A PO ) or a year-long senior thesis (CHIN 192B PO ). Students will be awarded one credit per semester for the senior project.

Oldenborg. All majors are encouraged to reside in Oldenborg Center for at least one year.

Study abroad. All majors are strongly encouraged to participate in a study-abroad program in China or Taiwan. The programs endorsed by this department are the Associated Colleges in China program in Beijing (summer & fall), the Middlebury School in Hangzhou (fall or spring), the Middlebury School in Kunming (fall or spring), and the CET program in Taiwan (fall or spring). Participation in certain other programs may be permitted upon consultation with the faculty and if approved by the Study Abroad Committee.
