Study of Western music from the mid-18th century to Mahler and Debussy, with reference to influence, stylistic development, reception history, performance practice, history of instruments and relevant theoretical writings. Engagement with issues related to religion, politics, culture, literature, class and gender in a historical context through the lens of music. Readings, listening, discussion, oral presentations, class performance and analytical projects. Fulfills one history and literature requirement for Music majors and minors. Prerequisites: MUS 080 PO ; MUS 081 PO and MUS 120A PO strongly recommended.
