Study of Western music from the Middle Ages from Bach to Handel, with reference to influence, stylistic development, reception history, performance practice, history of instruments and relevant theoretical writings. Engagement with issues related to religion, politics, culture, literature, class and gender in a historical context through the lens of music. Readings, listening, discussion, oral presentations, class performance and analytical projects. Fulfills one history and literature requirement for Music majors and minors; fulfills an elective for Late Antique-Medieval Studies majors. Prerequisites: MUS 080 PO or permission of instructor.
