Late Antique-Medieval Studies Major

Requirements for the Major in Late Antique-Medieval Studies (LAMS)

To complete the LAMS major, a student is required to complete a minimum of 11 courses plus a Senior Seminar (LAMS 190 PO ) and a Senior Project/Thesis (LAMS 191 PO ). These courses include:

• At least three courses in one of the following languages: Greek, Latin or Arabic. At least one must be numbered 100 or above. (CLAS 103 PO  and CLAS 104 PO  are half-courses; they must be taken twice to count as one of the three language course credits and will not count for more than one of the three language course credits).

• At least three courses from the Ancient offerings in Classics, including:
  • Ancient History: HIST 010 PO  (Ancient Mediterranean)
  • Two additional Ancient courses in any subfield. (RLST020 PO - Introduction to the Hebrew Bible: Text and Interpretation  may be substituted for one of these two courses).

• At least five courses from the LAMS offerings, including:
  • LAMS History: HIST 011 PO  (Medieval Mediterranean)
  • Four additional LAMS courses (see below) drawn from the four LAMS subfields.

LAMS students are expected to work with LAMS faculty members to design a cohesive and viable curriculum around their particular interests.
