Requirements for the Major in Environmental Analysis
The major consists of three sets of requirements:
- An introductory core set of three courses (EA 010 PO , EA 020 PO *, EA 030 PO or EA 030L JS )
*Note: EA 020 PO may be substituted for by taking PHIL 037 PO , RLST 166A PO , GRMT 170 PO , CLAS 175 PZ , or EA 086 PZ .
- A focus: There are two curricular concentrations or focal areas in EA. A student must select one in which to develop a “course plan” (CP):
- Environmental Science Focus in EA
- Society and Development Focus in EA
There are two options for CP development within each of these foci: (a) Select a pre-designed CP (see below), or (b) Design your own CP, including 7 but not exceeding 11 courses total, in addition to the core and capstone courses. Individually designed CP must show depth in some foundational discipline, or set of closely related disciplines, and must be cleared and approved by the EA Major Steering Committee.
- Senior Capstone:
- The senior thesis, completed in the fall of senior year (EA 191 PO )
- The senior seminar, completed in the spring (EA 190 PO )
Pre-approved Concentration Plans:
1. Environmental Science Concentration
(Advisor: Richard Hazlett)
- Three course EA introductory core (see above)
- Introductory Biology (ecology concentration recommended)
- Introductory Chemistry (CHEM 001A PO or CHEM 051 PO )
- Introductory Statistics (student choice, or AP5 exam credit)
- One from Physical Geography (KS) or Introductory Geology (PO)
- One from Physics and Society (PO) or Energy Systems Engineering (HMC)
- One from Food, Land and the Environment (PO), Principles of Soil Science (KS), Physical Geography (KS), Global Science Change (KS), or Oceanography (KS)
- Five from upper division science courses within a single department, not including any course or general topical area listed above
- Senior Capstone (see above)
2. Environment and Society Concentration
(Advisor: Bowman Cutter or Char Miller)
- Three course EA introductory core (see above)
- Introductory Statistics (student choice, or AP5 exam credit)
- One from Physical Geography KS
- One from POLI 060 PO , POLI 061 PO , POLI 039 PO , POLI 139 PO , EA 171 PO
- Five from EA 027 PO , EA 085 PO , PHIL 037 PO , PHIL 038 PO ; POLI 039 PO , POLI 139 PO ; RLST 166A PO , SOC 055 PO
- Senior Capstone (see above)
*Note: Physical Geography KS may be substituted for by taking BIO 44 KS or BIOL 041E PO or Introductory Geology PO
