Throughout, the course considers the relationship between visual culture and the growth, consolidation, and transformation of an expansive, multicultural, multilingual, and multi-confessional empire. Given the centuries-long history of the Ottoman empire and its vast territories, the course encompasses diverse themes including royal and gendered patronage, the status of artists and architects at the royal court, cross-cultural exchange, urbanism, the circulation of objects through trade and diplomacy, the introduction of new technologies in the nineteenth century, and the emergence of “Ottomania” in the twentieth century.
