This course considers the painting traditions of South Asia, from antiquity to the present day. It explores a variety of media, from mural paintings in Buddhist caves to medieval manuscripts to multimedia installations. Themes include materiality, workshop practice, artistic agency, the relationship between image and text, connoisseurship, collecting, the development of regional styles, and connections between historical and contemporary painting practice. The course interweaves history and historiography, considering both the development of distinctive painting traditions as well as their representation in colonial and contemporary histories.
