This is a fourth-year Chinese language acquisition course. The class focuses on topics related to international and interethnic exchanges that have taken place in China in the modern era (roughly 19th century-present). Students will learn to approach China from an international and interethnic perspective by tracing key moments in modern China’s encounter with both the world outside it and the ethnic minority groups within it. Students will study historical photography, documents, watch movies, and read essays related to how international and interethnic exchanges have shaped China’s national identity and cultural identity. Students will both develop their Chinese language skills and gain important insights into China’s relationship to the multicultural modern world.
