ENGL170P PO - James Joyce &

When Offered: Offered alternate years
Instructor(s): K. Dettmar
Credit: 1

An examination of the fiction of James Joyce in the contexts of its reception history and the ways that history influenced nascent developments in literary theory. Besides changing the way fiction is written today, Joyce has profoundly affected how critical prose is now written. Joyce is one of those writers who seem to create their own critics; we speak of a unique breed of scholar, the ‘Joycean’, as we speak of the scholars of very few other writers (Shakespeare, Chaucer, perhaps Milton). We’ll be especially interested this semester to consider the question of the shifting contexts of Joyce’s texts to account for his continuing literary, artistic, and cultural force.
Satisfies the following General Education Requirement(s), subject to conditions explained in the Degree Requirements section of this Catalog:
