This course examines Latin American culture and society through the lens of global interconnections. We will explore how industrialized global capitalism emerged in the plantations in the New World, and how categories of race were constructed in the colonies and later in the newly independent nation states. Additionally, the course will examine the production of global connections in terms of social movements, neoliberalism, migration, and networks of knowledge. Finally, we will look at nostalgia for an imagined time prior to a globally embedded Latin America. Letter grade only.
