Fundamental and cutting-edge concepts in database design: entity-relationship model, relational and semi-structured models. Query languages: relational algebra, relational calculus, SQL, XPath and SPARQL. Mechanism and design of database management systems: storage model, indexing, key algorithms such as sorting and joins, query evaluation and optimization, and concurrency control. Key ideas will be practiced via course projects that involve the design and implementation of real-life database applications. Students will be guided in a study of ethical issues in data management and the impact of data management technologies to the society. A term paper will be the pinnacle of the study. Prerequisites: CSCI 062 PO or CSCI 070 HM .
