This transdisciplinary course examines the history of Haiti as a symbol of liberation and its religious material culture as aesthetic inspiration for African American artists, as well as the impact of the U.S. occupation on artists in Haiti. We will also explore the iconography of resistance within the work of Haitian artists and the role of the coincident U.S. tourism boom in Haiti on local arts and religious material culture.
