Chemical and physical principles are used to describe the complex system of the earth’s atmosphere and ocean. Atmospheric and oceanic structure, design of simple models, and transport will be covered followed by selected topics concerning geochemical cycles, speciation of elements, the greenhouse effect, aerosols, stratospheric ozone, smog and acid rain. Prerequisites: CHEM 158A PO or CHEM 158B PO or CHEM 156 PO , MATH 032 PO and one year of general physics.
