This course explores the economic causes and consequences of crime, with a primary focus on the United States. Topics include the relationships among criminal activity, arrest rates, conviction rates and incarceration and how these differ by race, gender, age and income. Benefit-cost analysis is employed to evaluate the allocation of resources within the criminal justice system, including drug enforcement laws, anti-crime strategies, mass incarceration, capital punishment and inmate rehabilitation programs.
