This course explores the making of space, place and geography in recent historical work. The course begins with an exploration of theoretical works that interrogate the significance of space as a critical element of social theory and historical consideration. After establishing a firm theoretical foundation, the course then proceeds through exploring questions of coloniality, civil society, activism and state space. Students will also have to do a research project about public spaces in East Asia.
