This course offers an in-depth exploration of the multifaceted role of sport in French and Francophone literature and media, examining its cultural and political ramifications from the 19th century to the present. Through the critical analysis of athletes’ biographies, films, graphic novels, novels, short stories, and poems, students will uncover how sport serves as a powerful narrative tool for engaging with complex debates on citizenship, migration, (post)colonialism, social mobility, (dis)ableism, and gender dynamics. The course also integrates diverse media, including podcasts, press articles, photographs, and videos of significant historical events and iconic performances, to provide a comprehensive understanding of how athletic competition and physicality reflect and shape societal values.
