Readings and problems will be taken from three types of sources: (1) Euclid’s Elements of Geometry; (2) modern elementary works on probability and its applications to the study of society and to gambling; (3) the writings of philosophers whose views were strongly influenced by mathematics, such as Plato, Aristotle, Pascal, Spinoza, Kant, Laplace, Helmholtz, and Thomas Jefferson.     Calculus III with Applications to the Life Sciences. Presents the core topics of Multivariable Calculus (Math 32) and probability in the context of problems from the life sciences. Topics include: vector fields, limits and continuity, differentiability, linearization, probability distributions, multiple integrals, line integrals, and Green’s Theorem. Applications include models of species interaction in ecosystems, the spread of disease and mutations. Provides an excellent background for students who intend to go on to Math 60 as well as for students taking a mathematical modeling course (e.g. MATH183) or a course on dynamical systems (e.g. Math 112).
