A research seminar focused on the history of the idea of holy war in the Mediterranean world from Constantine (4C) to Saladin (12C). Primary source readings will be supplemented by scholarly studies of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim attitudes toward war. Students will write their own research papers. Letter grade only.
