Requirements for the Major in Philosophy, Politics and Economics


Courses taken for the major must be taken for a letter grade.

  1. Four courses in philosophy (PHIL)

    1. course - Ethical Theory: Historical Perspectives, or course - Ethical Theory: Contemporary, or course - Well-being and Autonomy, or course - Medical Ethics  

    2. course - Political Philosophy, or course - Philosophy of Law 

    3. course - Ancient Philosophy, or course - History of Modern Philosophy, or course - Continental Thought 

    4. One additional course in philosophy or course

  2. Four courses in politics (POLI)

    1. course - Classical Political Theory, or course - Modern Political Theory 

    2. course - Introduction to American Politics, or course - Introduction to Comparative Politics, or course - Introduction to International Relations 

    3. course - American Constitutionalism I: Structures of Power, or course - American Constitutionalism II: Rights and Liberties 

    4. One additional course in politics numbered POLI 010 PO or above or course

  3. Four courses in economics (ECON)

    1. course - Principles: Macroeconomics 

    2. course - Principles: Microeconomics 

    3. course - Microeconomic Theory 

    4. One additional course in economics or course

  4. Depth of Study. Each student must complete two additional courses in a department of primary focus, either Philosophy, Politics or Economics. These are courses 13 and 14 for the major. Students focusing on Economics who have not taken an approved course in statistics must take course as one of their two additional courses in Economics. Approved courses in statistics include course, coursecourse, or a similar course accepted by the program director.

Note about course. PPE 100 PO - Enrich, Enlighten, and Reform: Introduction to PPE, may be used to satisfy one of the additional course requirements (4, 8, or 12).

Note about courses in Economics. Business-oriented courses, such as accounting and real estate law, are sometimes offered with an ECON prefix. Such courses, including Pomona’s ECON 117 Managerial Accounting Financial Analysis, do not satisfy the PPE major’s economics requirements.
