Theatre Major


Requirements for the Major in Theatre


Theatre majors may choose one of the following emphases; general theatre, performance, design or dramaturgy/playwriting (history, theory and dramatic literature).

  1. Core courses
    1. A course in acting: THEA 001A PO , THEA 001C PO , THEA 001E PO , THEA 001F PO THEA 007 PO , or THEA 008 PO .
    2. One course is design:THEA 002 PO .
    3. One course (or the equivalent) in movement: THEA 013 PO  or THEA 014 PO , and/or any studio course taught by the Pomona College Dance Program or the Scripps College Dance Department. (This requirement may be met by one full credit course, or a combination of two half-courses, which can be in a single subject, or spread out among two of the three above.)
    4. One course in theatre technology: THEA 021 PO THEA 022 PO THEA 023 PO , or THEA 024 PO .
    5. Three courses in theatre history and/or dramatic literature:Two of THEA 110 PO  thru THEA 113 PO  sequence and one of the THEA115  PO-series (Pre-approved courses in other departments may be used in fulfilling these requirements).
    6. One course in theatrical theory and criticism: THEA 188 PO .
    7. Four production crew assignments; THEA 052C PO  or THEA 052H PO .
    8. Senior Thesis: THEA 191H PO  (half-course).
  2. Additional Required Courses
    1. General theatre emphasis:
      1. Completion of all core courses listed above.
      2. THEA 191 PO - Senior Thesis   for full credit.
    2. Performance emphasis:
      1. THEA 012 PO - Intermediate Acting .
      2. THEA 017 PO - Make-up  (half-course).
      3. Three courses in advanced acting:THEA100 PO series.
      4. THEA 053HGPO  or THEA 053HIPO  (half-course).
      5. THEA 054C PO  or the equivalent (half-course).
      6. THEA 192H PO THEA 192H PO - Senior Project in Performance  (half-course).
    3. Design emphasis:
      1. One Course from the THEA 021 PO  thru THEA 024 PO  sequence, in addition to the one course taken in the sequence listed in the core requirements above.
      2. THEA 017 PO - Make-up  (half-course).
      3. THEA 080 PO - Scene Design for Stage and Screen .
      4. THEA 081 PO - Costume Design for Stage & Screen .
      5. THEA 082 PO - Lighting Design for Stage and Screen .
      6. One crew assignment as an assistant designer to a member of the permanent faculty in the area or areas of the student’s planned senior project-THEA 052C PO  or THEA 052H PO .

    4. Dramaturgy/playwriting emphasis:
      1. Any two of the THEA 110 PO  thru THEA 113 PO  sequence and/or the THEA115-series not already taken as part of the core requirement above. All dramaturgy/playwriting students must take THEA 115 PO. (Pre-approved courses in other departments may be used in fulfilling these requirements.)
      2. THEA 141 PO - Dramaturgy  (a half-credit).
      3. THEA 170 PO - Writing for Performance ;
      4. One half-credit crew assignment as either an assistant director or a stage manager for a faculty-directed production-THEA 052H PO .

Academic credit is available for students involved in performance and/or production activities under faculty supervision. (See THEA 051C PO  and THEA 051H PO , and/or THEA 052C PO  and THEA 052H PO )

Students majoring in theatre are expected to actively participate in the departmental production program, which normally includes four major productions, a dance concert and a number of student-directed productions. Theatre majors are also expected to attend workshops, lectures and other events sponsored by the department as part of their educational enrichment.

Declared theatre majors and minors must take all required courses within the department for a letter grade.
