Japanese Major

Requirements for the Major in Chinese or Japanese

Study abroad. All majors are required to participate in a study-abroad program endorsed by this department. Chinese majors must attend either the Associated Colleges in China program in Beijing or the C. V. Starr-Middlebury Schools Abroad program in Hangzhou. Japanese majors must attend the International Christian University program in Tokyo or the Associated Kyoto program at Doshisha University in Kyoto. If a student is unable to attend an existing Pomona-endorsed program, participation in certain other programs may be permitted upon consultation with the faculty and approval by the Study Abroad Committee.

Courses. All courses for the major must be taken for a letter grade.

Oldenborg.  All majors are encouraged to reside in Oldenborg Center for at least one year.

1. Eight upper-division courses: JAPN 111A PO , JAPN 111B PO , JAPN 124 PO , JAPN 125 PO , JAPN 131 PO , JPNT 170 PO , JPNT 174 PO ; and either JPNT 176 PO , JPNT 177 PO , JPNT 178 PO  or JPNT 179 PO 
2. Senior Project (JAPN 192A PO , JAPN 192B PO ), guided research on selected topics in each semester of the final year
