Late Antique-Medieval Studies (LAMS) involves the interdisciplinary study of the Mediterranean and Near East in the periods known as Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages; that is, from the first through the sixteenth centuries. This period witnessed the Christianization of the Roman Empire, the rise of the so-called “barbarian kingdoms” and the emergence and spread of Islam. Despite competing political and religious claims, the ties between the greater Latin, Greek and Arabic cultures that shared the Mediterranean basin remained strong. Not only did each of these cultures identify with an Abrahamic religious tradition, but each also saw itself as an heir to the rich secular traditions of the Greek and Roman, as well as the Persian empires. Students of LAMS explore these fertile cultural encounters from a fresh, multi-disciplinary perspective with appropriate attention to the foundational languages: Greek, Latin and Arabic.
The Late Antique-Medieval Studies (LAMS) major and minor are administered by the Classics department. Like Classics, LAMS is a cooperative intercollegiate program. LAMS courses taught at any of The Claremont Colleges count as Pomona courses. Greek, Latin and Arabic–one of which is required for the LAMS major and minor–may be taken to fulfill the Pomona College foreign language requirement. Courses taken on the Pass/No Credit (P/NC) grading basis may not be counted toward either the major or the minor except for courses which are only offered in P/NC form.
