California is the largest, most populous and most diverse state in the nation. As such, it occupies a unique place as a leader in political change and policy innovation. This course examines the issues and challenges confronting the state of California including case studies involving health care, environmental justice, transportation, immigration and political reform. Special emphasis will be given to the roles of the legislature, legislative leadership, special interests, advocacy groups, ballot initiatives, and the media.
