A product of empire and the soul of revolution, the Russian Avant-Garde of the 1920s challenged history and tradition. This course investigates Russian and Soviet art and architecture of the first half of the 20th century, its roots and origins, as well as its role in the tumultuous history of European Modernism. Topics will include: the Slavic revival, Ballets Russes, and the World of Art; the art of the Russian Revolution, impressionism; cubism, constructivism, rationalism, and suprematism; art and ideology; Socialist Realism.
