A detailed investigation of the structure of the Milky Way and the Local Group. Topics will include dynamical models, interstellar/circumgalactic media, stellar populations, and the supermassive black hole. We will also study Andromeda in close detail, plus their classical satellites, ultra-faint satellites, stellar streams, and constrains on the nature of dark matter. The course will have a special focus on recent advances in the field, with emphasis on the latest observational campaigns. Half-course. Prerequisites: PHYS 101 PO, and ASTR 051 PO or ASTR 062 PO, or permission of the instructor. Offered jointly with Harvey Mudd and Joint Sciences. Letter grade only.
