ENGL170Y PO - Metaphysical PoetsWhen Offered: Irregularly Instructor(s): A. Kunin Credit: 1
A figure of speech is a twisted piece of language. Poets try to express difficult ideas by folding language on itself, stretching it out, and pushing it around. The metaphysical poets of the seventeenth century compress language to a point of distortion where “heterogeneous ideas are yoked by violence together” in intense, extravagant images. In this seminar, we will study the religious and erotic lyrics of this group of poets, including Donne, Herbert, Marvell, Cavendish, Vaughan, Crashaw, Traherne, Behn, and Rochester. Satisfies the following General Education Requirement(s), subject to conditions explained in the Degree Requirements section of this Catalog: PO Area 1 Requirement;PO Writing Intensive Req
