How have black writers used literature in the service of political critique, development, resistance, transformation, and vision? What has the role of literature been in shaping black political thought? In this course, we explore black political thought and literary imagination, with a particular focus on American authors. We will consider works by writers such as James Baldwin, Octavia Butler, Martin Delany, Audre Lorde, and Toni Morrison, among others. This course is co-taught at Pomona and Scripps.
