Multimedia and trans-disciplinary, this course will ground you in centuries of French history and culture while giving you insights into France today. What do buildings such as the Eiffel Tower, the Montparnasse tower, Versailles, the Louvre or Notre-Dame can teach us about Paris, France and the French identity? What does looking at HLM (habitation à loyer modéré) and the movies that celebrated them in the 1970’s tells us about French politics, French economics and French immigration? To answer such questions, we will read and analyse historical texts, look at the literature (novels, opera, poems etc.) that deal with architecture, and discuss paintings, maps and photography. Letter grade only. Prerequisites: FREN 044 PO.
