POLI030 PO - The U.S. Congress: People Place and PolicyWhen Offered: Offered alternate years; next offered spring 2024 Instructor(s): S. Diament Credit: 1
Congress is the storied chief lawmaking body in the U.S., simultaneously leading, following, and disregarding public sentiment as it legislates. That is, when it legislates: the institution is one of the least popular entities in the nation and has been mired in low productivity since the 1990s. Using both qualitative and quantitative analytical approaches, we will find answers to the following questions: What explains changes in public perception and productivity level? What are lawmakers doing with their time if they are not solving public problems? How well does the institution represent ‘the people’? Which people? And finally, how is power expressed in Congress? Satisfies the following General Education Requirement(s), subject to conditions explained in the Degree Requirements section of this Catalog: Area 2
