Examines the roots of popular music in the United States, with an emphasis on the relationship between musical processes and historical reception. Through listening, analysis, historical study, and performance, the course draws connections between music and meaning in repertoire ranging from late-19th-century song through early blues and string band music, folk, bluegrass, rock ‘n’ roll, and funk. Considers how American musical genres correspond to categories of cultural difference. No previous musical experience required, although performing on an instrument of the student’s choice will be part of the coursework.
