This introductory-level course will survey the history of the United States, from the Civil War to the present. The course will explore transformations in politics, culture, technology, and foreign policy, and trace the changing ways that race, class, and gender intersect with one another. Students will develop skills analyzing a wide range of primary sources, including written documents as well as film, music, and images. This course will examine in detail the Black freedom struggle, the rise and fall of the New Deal order, and the domestic consequences of American foreign policy.
