Approaches the development of American music from the vantage of music-making in maritime contexts. Analyzes the formative influence of interactions between laborers, of diverse cultural backgrounds, in the creation of American musical genres. Special attention given to the sea chanty genre and sailors’ songs. Includes opportunities for in-class performance of the musical traditions.
