Examines the varied soundscape of popular music in the United States, with an emphasis on the relationship between sound production and historical reception. Through listening, analysis, criticism, and performance, the course draws connections between music and meaning in repertoire ranging from 19th-century song through early blues and country music, folk, funk, pop, and hip-hop. Considers how American musical genres correspond to categories of cultural difference.
