Examines China as a nation in transition; the critical junctures in Chinese history: 1949, the Cultural Revolution, post-Mao economic reforms, Tiananmen Square and their impact on Chinese culture and social life. How Chinese culture and society are “represented” by different authors; China as an ideological construction; minority identity; effects of global and mass mediated popular culture; Chinese diaspora in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore; resistance to Chinese identity by Tibetans, Uyghurs and Taiwanese.
