Calculus-based introduction to principles of contemporary physics, designed especially for potential physics and astronomy majors. (Life-science students should take PHYS 041 PO /PHYS 042 PO ). Topics include conservation laws, special relativity, quantum physics and thermal physics, all viewed from a 21st-century perspective. Prerequisites: high school physics and completion or concurrent enrollment in one of the following: MATH 030 PO , MATH 031 PO , MATH 031H PO , MATH 031S PO , MATH 032 PO or MATH 032S PO . Sophomores and above may enroll only with permission. Satisfies the following General Education Requirement(s), subject to conditions explained in the Degree Requirements section of this Catalog: Area 4
