Minerals are the building blocks of the solid Earth. The interrelation of chemical, structural and optical properties is emphasized for identifying minerals in the field and lab and understanding their geologic significance. The course makes use of optical and electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and computer visualization techniques. Field trips. Letter grade only. Prerequisite: One introductory geology course. Satisfies the following General Education Requirement(s), subject to conditions explained in the Degree Requirements section of this Catalog: Area 4
