Literary works that foreground servants and slaves to rethink who is and should be master. Uppity servants in comedies by Molière. Marivaux and Beaumarchais, women coming to voice despite “Oriental” harem despotism and French paternalism in novels by Montesquieu and Françoise de Graffigny: the supposedly universal “Declaration of the Rights of Man” of 1789.
