An exploration of the history of Iran and its global interactions from the times of the Persian empires and the Silk Roads to the age of empires and the coming of the 1979 Revolution. The course considers the land, language and literature of the peoples of Iran, tracing the adoption of Islam, the establishment of early modern Persianate empires, encounters with European imperialism, integration into the modern world economy and the radical political movements that culminated in the Islamic Revolution. Letter grade only.
