This multi-disciplinary course examines sound as a cultural and technological artifact. Surveying recent scholarship in cognitive science, history, musicology, media studies and psychoacoustics, we study film, music, historical recording devices and other devices, architectural and urban spaces and other sites of sound in the world from roughly 1500 to the present.
