This course is an introduction analyzing variation in the sounds of language. Students will learn technical skills (including Praat) for examining acoustic differences between languages and language varieties, and will use these skills to conduct small research projects. Class themes will focus on how phonetic realizations vary systematically between social groups and will engage issues of class, gender, ethnic, regional and/or other differences. Letter grade only. Prerequisites: LGCS112 PO or by permission of instructor. Satisfies the following General Education Requirement(s), subject to conditions explained in the Degree Requirements section of this Catalog: Area 2
