A history of empire and imperialism in the modern Middle East and North Africa, examining the emergence of European colonialism in the region during the nineteenth century. The course explores the nature of contacts and encounters between European empires and Islamic cultures in the age of colonialism. Subjects include Orientalism and cultural imperialism; imperial projects and modern transformations; British imperialism in Mesopotamia, Egypt and the Indian Ocean world; French colonial adventures in the Maghrib; and other episodes of empire and colonialism in Islamic Asia and Africa. (Africa/African Diaspora, South Asia, and the Middle East)
