Asks how the visual cultures of past times relate to those of the present. Proceeds chronologically and globally. Provides an introduction to medieval art in the Mediterranean from the fourth to the fifteenth century. Introduces the arts of Europe, the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world, pointing out the connections between major artistic, cultural and economic spheres. Central themes are the media and materiality in medieval art, trade and exchange, prayer and devotion, pilgrimage and Crusade. ARHI 051A PO , ARHI051B PO, and ARHI 051C PO  may be taken in any order.
