Description
Volcanic eruptions rapidly transform the landscape, impact the atmosphere, and create a multitude of hazards. These eruptions are produced by the transfer of mass and energy from Earth?s interior to the surface. In this course, analyzing, interpreting, and understanding the complexity of volcanic systems is emphasized. Topics covered include global volcano distribution, volcanic landforms, eruptive products and compositions, eruptive styles and hazard types, monitoring techniques, societal impacts of hazards, and hazard mitigation. Learning is achieved through a combination of conceptual lessons, hand sample and thin section analysis, quantitative modeling, and practical application of mitigation techniques. Field Trips. Letter grade only. Prerequisites: MATH 030 PO and one introductory geology course.
