Well-being and Autonomy

Course Title

Well-being and Autonomy

Description

This course focuses on two important ethical values, well-being and autonomy and what to do when the pursuit of one conflicts with the other. What makes someones life go better or worse? What if someones life can be made to go better or at least prevented from going worse but only at the cost of undermining that persons autonomy, that is, by interfering with how the person has chosen to live her or his life? What if the greater good of a community requires limitations on personal freedoms or the infringement of the right not to be harmed? Possible contexts of conflict include sports, medicine, national security and war. There are no pre-requisites for this class.
