This course will examine various works of art produced in the U.S. from 1900 to the present. Students will learn to conduct a critical analysis of how visual images and the written texts that describe them function within society at different moments in time. Themes will include, among others, the Ashcan School and urban life; the Harlem Renaissance and the New Negro Movement; public art and the Great Depression; abstract expressionism and the Cold War; art and activism; and postmodernism and consumer culture.
