Biologically utilized elements and compounds on Earth affect the global carbon cycle and regulate the Earth’s climate. This course provides a theoretical framework for understanding the processes that control the distribution and cycling of such elements and compounds. Emphasis is placed on biogeochemical cycles in the oceans of the present day and in the geologic past, but some aspects of terrestrial processes will be also considered. Students taking this course will gain understanding of the fundamental geochemical methods, especially application of stable isotopes in biogeochemistry. The course also introduces basic principles of geochemical modeling; such as box models of element cycling. A blend of lectures and student-led seminar discussions of published works will make up class meetings; course project work will make use of the Geology department geochemical research facilities. Letter grade only.
