This course explores how Japan’s cultural identity has been defined in relation to the foreign, particularly China and the West, since 1600. Through readings in fiction, drama, travelogues, philosophy, political thought, and government propaganda, we will examine such topics as the Confucian, National Learning (kokugaku), and Dutch Learning movements of the Tokugawa period (1600-1868), the Meiji period (1868-1912) quest for “civilization and enlightenment,” and the World War II discourse on “overcoming modernity.”
