Greek Tragedy and anti-Apartheid efforts. Roman Epic and Colorism. Greek and Roman Studies at HBCUs. This literature course will introduce students to the complex and long standing relationships between Greco-Roman culture and the African continent, with a particular focus on how the Classics has been challenged, bettered, and influenced by traditions across the African diaspora. What do civilizations in the Ancient Mediterranean offer not only as a site of resistance to European cultural dominance and White normativity but also as a place also in need of recuperation by methodologies created for/by African diasporic artists, intellectuals, and activists ? Readings will include secondary criticism and primary texts from antiquity to today.
