In this class we study performance as an object and as an interpretive lens through which to study the practice of everyday life, as well as exceptional creative texts such as performance art, plays, protest and political speech. We will work through the interdisciplinary history of the field, including its emergence from the fields of theatre studies, anthropology, sociology, dance, gender studies, critical race and ethnic studies and queer studies.
